Pirenópolis in 3 days: town, waterfalls and mountains

Three days let you add the Serra dos Pireneus to the essentials of the town and the waterfalls.

Updated on October 4, 2026 ✓ Information checked on October 4, 2026 adapted from the Portuguese original

With three days, Pirenópolis fits without rushing. Our suggestion is one day for the town, one for a full-day waterfall and one for the Serra dos Pireneus, the mountain range that gives the town its name.

Day 1 — Historic centre and museums

Time Plan
Morning The historic centre on foot: Rua Direita, Rua Aurora, the bridge over the Rio das Almas
Afternoon The Igreja Matriz do Rosário, the Igreja do Carmo and the Museu do Divino
Evening Dinner on Rua do Rosário (the Rua do Lazer)

Day 2 — Full-day waterfall

Time Plan
Morning Cachoeira do Abade (advance purchase mandatory) or Cachoeiras Bonsucesso
Afternoon A longer trail, a swim and some rest
Evening Feira das Artes craft fair (weekends and public holidays) and the centre

Day 3 — Serra dos Pireneus

Time Plan
Morning Pireneus State Park and the Pico dos Pireneus
Afternoon Vargem Grande Ecological Reserve, on the same road
Evening A last dinner in the centre or the trip home

Variations

  • Prefer forest to viewpoints? Swap the mountains for the Vagafogo Sanctuary, with a trail through riverside forest and an adventure circuit; the official website asks you to book.
  • Into history? Add Fazenda Babilônia, a former colonial sugar mill on the GO-431 highway, one morning.
  • Travelling during the Festa do Divino? Set aside one of the days for the Cavalhadas and adjust the rest.

Logistics

Staying in or near the centre makes evenings easier; staying in the countryside suits nature lovers but requires a car. Compare in where to stay. For one more day, see the 4-day itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Serra dos Pireneus and a waterfall on the same day?

Yes, if they are on the same route. The Vargem Grande Ecological Reserve is on the Pireneus road, the same one that leads to the state park. Leave early and check each one's opening hours.

Do I need a 4x4 for the mountains?

There is no official information requiring a 4x4. Access includes a dirt road, which gets worse after rain. Ask about conditions at the Tourist Information Centre (CAT) or hire transport from a registered agency.
