The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel) is one of the three old churches in Pirenópolis’s historic centre. According to the City Hall, it was built between 1750 and 1754, in work attributed to Luciano da Costa Teixeira and Antônio Rodrigues Frota. Today it houses the Museum of Sacred Art (Museu de Arte Sacra), which opened in 2009.
Why visit
The church offers two experiences in one: seeing a church from the gold-rush era and viewing a collection that helps explain the religious devotion that still shapes the town today — the same devotion expressed in the Festa do Divino and the processions of the local calendar.
For anyone who wants to understand Pirenópolis beyond its waterfalls, it is one of the most interesting stops in the centre.
What to look for
- The architecture: the church follows the simplicity typical of 18th-century religious buildings in Goiás, with a sober façade and an interior that retains elements from the period.
- The museum collection: sacred art pieces linked to the town’s churches and faith.
- The surroundings: the church is on Rua do Carmo, in the Carmo neighbourhood, a quieter part of the historic centre.
How to fit it into your itinerary
Rua do Carmo is a short walk from the Mother Church and the bridge over the Rio das Almas. A good order for an afternoon in the centre:
| Stop | Suggested time |
|---|---|
| Mother Church and Praça da Matriz | 30 to 60 min |
| Carmo Church and Museum of Sacred Art | 40 to 60 min |
| Museu do Divino, by the bridge | 30 to 45 min |
| Bonfim Church, up the hill | 30 min |
This circuit also works well as a rainy-day plan.

Heritage protection
The Carmo Church is protected as part of Pirenópolis’s listed historic ensemble.
