Pirenópolis with kids: planning a family trip
Short trails, calm pools, a walkable centre and the precautions that make a difference with little ones.

Pirenópolis works very well for families: the historic centre is small and safe to walk around, and there are natural attractions with short trails and good facilities. The secret is to choose the waterfalls carefully and not overload the day.
Choosing the waterfalls
With children, three criteria matter more than how beautiful the waterfall is:
- Distance and road: sites close to town save time in the car. The Bonsucesso Waterfalls are about 5 km from the historic centre, according to the official website.
- Trail: choose short, well-marked trails. At Abade Waterfall, the official website lists two trails, one 500 m long and the other 2.5 km.
- Facilities: toilets, a snack bar and shade make all the difference on a full day out.
Sites with long trails — such as the Dragões Waterfalls, with about 4.5 km of trail — are better for older children who are used to walking.
Nature and learning
The Vagafogo Wildlife Sanctuary is a private reserve close to town, with an interpretive forest trail (the main trail is about 1.5 km, according to the official website) and an adventure circuit with treetop walks and a zip line. Check the age and height restrictions for the adventure activities on the sanctuary’s website.
In the historic centre
- A walk through the stone streets — hard going with a pushchair; a baby carrier helps.
- The Rio das Almas bridge and river beach, in the centre, for an outdoor late afternoon.
- Feira das Artes (Arts Fair), on Praça do Coreto, on weekends and public holidays.
- Museu Rodas do Tempo, with vintage two-wheeled vehicles and toys; the City Hall says children under 5 go free.

Practical tips
- Sun and heat: hats, sunscreen and water at all times; avoid trails in the hottest part of the day.
- Accommodation: guesthouses (pousadas) with a pool or garden help on free afternoons. See where to stay.
- Festivals: during the Festa do Divino the town gets very crowded; agree on a meeting point with the children.
- Rain: have a plan B — see Pirenópolis on rainy days.

Which waterfall is best with kids?
