Pirenópolis has a busy cultural calendar for a town its size. Many of its festivals are religious and date back to the colonial period; others are music and literature festivals that draw visitors from Brasília (Brazil’s capital), Goiânia (capital of Goiás state) and other states. The calendar above shows editions with dates confirmed by an official source and, when the next edition has not yet been announced, marks it as “dates to be confirmed”.
How we handle dates
- Official sources only. Dates come from the Cultural Calendar published by Pirenópolis City Hall or from each event’s official website.
- No “rolling over” the year. When an edition ends, it is shown as finished; the next one only gets a date once it is announced.
- Programmes change. Times and line-ups are set by each event’s organisers. Always check close to your trip.
The big events of the year
Festa do Divino and the Cavalhadas
This is the town’s best-known celebration and follows Pentecost Sunday, fifty days after Easter — which is why the date changes every year. In 2026, the City Hall’s Cultural Calendar recorded Pentecost Sunday on 24 May and the Cavalhadas on 24, 25 and 26 May. Details in Festa do Divino and Cavalhadas.
Festa do Morro
A pilgrimage in honour of the Holy Trinity at the top of the Serra dos Pireneus, recognised as intangible cultural heritage of the State of Goiás. In 2026 the official calendar recorded the festival from 30 July to 2 August. See Festa do Morro.
Canto da Primavera
A music festival organised by the Goiás State Government. The 2026 edition, the 25th, was announced on the official festival website for 8–13 September.
FLIPIRI
The Pirenópolis Literary Festival brings together writers, reading and activities in schools. The 2026 dates were reported by the press, with no official website found — which is why we treat this edition with caution. See FLIPIRI.
Other festivals on the official calendar
The City Hall’s 2026 Cultural Calendar also lists, among others:
| Period (2026) | Event |
|---|---|
| January | Festa de São Sebastião, with an ox-cart parade |
| February | Carnival |
| March and April | Holy Week, with processions |
| June | Corpus Christi (street carpets) and the children’s Cavalhadinha |
| July | Festa de Nossa Senhora do Carmo |
| September | Festa do Senhor do Bonfim |
| September and October | Novena of Our Lady of the Rosary |
| 7 October | Town anniversary |
| October | Serenade through the streets |
| December | Natal do Cerrado (Cerrado Christmas) |
The exact dates of each are in the calendar published by the City Hall. On 7 October 2027 Pirenópolis turns 300 years old; the anniversary programme has not yet been announced.
Frequently asked questions
What is the main event in Pirenópolis?
The Festa do Divino Espírito Santo (Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit), with the Cavalhadas. It was registered by Iphan, Brazil's national heritage institute, as Cultural Heritage of Brazil in 2010 and takes place around Pentecost Sunday.
Are event dates the same every year?
Not necessarily. Religious festivals follow the liturgical calendar and festivals depend on each edition. We only publish dates confirmed by an official source; the rest are shown as 'to be confirmed'.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance during festivals?
Yes. During periods such as the Festa do Divino, the Canto da Primavera and public holidays, demand rises sharply. Book early and check the cancellation policy.
