Pirenópolis travel tips: what to know before you go
Water safety, bookings, footwear, money and where to get information in town.

Pirenópolis is peaceful and welcoming, but a few pieces of information will help you make the most of your trip — and avoid risks, especially at the waterfalls. Here are the tips that matter most.
Water safety
The waterfalls are the main natural attraction and also where the greatest risk lies.
- Flash floods (cabeça d’água): rain upstream can make the river rise suddenly, even when it is sunny where you are. Water that changes colour, carries leaves and branches or gets louder is a sign to get out immediately.
- Do not jump off rocks without knowing how deep the pool is.
- Respect signposted areas and the instructions of monitors and staff.
- Always supervise children near the water.
Bookings and tickets
- Several waterfalls require advance purchase or booking — Abade Waterfall, for example, states on its official website that advance purchase is mandatory.
- Some have a daily visitor limit, such as the Rosário Waterfall.
- On public holidays, book restaurants and accommodation in advance too.
In town
- Footwear: the streets of the historic centre are uneven stone and some are steep. Wear trainers or sturdy sandals.
- Parking: spaces in the centre are in demand on weekends; leave the car at your guesthouse when you can and walk.
- Churches and museums: according to the City Hall, several open on limited days and hours and charge a token entrance fee; confirm beforehand. Respect any services in progress.
- The old mansions are homes: take photos discreetly.
What to bring
- Sunscreen, a hat and a water bottle — the Cerrado sun is strong all year round.
- Insect repellent, especially in the rainy season.
- Hiking shoes and sandals for the water.
- A light jacket for winter nights and mornings (June to August).
- A bag to carry your own rubbish back.
Money and payments
Bring more than one form of payment. Prices are in Brazilian reais (BRL). Many Brazilians pay with Pix, an instant bank-transfer system, but at rural attractions the mobile signal can be weak, which makes app payments difficult. For banks and ATMs, see banks in the business directory.
Official information
According to the City Hall’s Tourism Portal, the Tourist Information Centre (CAT) is on Rua do Bonfim, in the historic centre. The City Hall also publishes a list of registered guides, agencies and tourist transport operators — useful for booking tours. See tour agencies and guides and services.
In an emergency
Brazil’s national emergency numbers work in town: SAMU (ambulance) 192, Fire Brigade 193 and Military Police 190. Information about the hospital is in health.
Respect the town
Pirenópolis has a listed historic centre and festivals recognised as heritage. Do not climb on walls and monuments, do not take plants or rocks from the trails and avoid loud music in residential streets. The town will thank you — and stay beautiful for the next visit.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I get tourist information in Pirenópolis?
At the Tourist Information Centre (CAT), which the City Hall's Tourism Portal lists on Rua do Bonfim, in the historic centre. As the portal's information dates from 2021, confirm its opening hours locally.
Can I bring a speaker to the waterfalls?
Generally not: most natural attractions ban loud music. Each has its own rules, published on its official website or at the entrance.
Do I need to hire a guide for the waterfalls?
It depends on the site. Some trails have monitors or require accompaniment; others can be done on your own. Check each place's rules before you go.
