Pirenópolis is a small town, and many outings take place in nature, far from the centre. Knowing where to get medical care and taking precautions keeps a mishap from spoiling your trip.
Emergencies
| Service | Number |
|---|---|
| SAMU (medical emergencies / ambulance) | 192 |
| Corpo de Bombeiros (Fire Brigade: rescue, drowning) | 193 |
| Polícia Militar (police) | 190 |
These are free national numbers in Brazil. On trails and at waterfalls, mobile signal may drop; agree with the attraction’s staff on how to call for help.
Medical care in town
The Hospital Estadual de Pirenópolis Ernestina Lopes Jaime (HEELJ) is the municipality’s main hospital, according to a document from the Goiás State Health Department. More complex cases may be referred through the state system to other cities, such as Anápolis and Goiânia (the state capital). We have not yet found an official source listing the municipal health units.
Prevention on trails and at waterfalls
- Flash floods (cabeça d’água): rain upstream can make the river rise suddenly. If the water turns cloudy, carries branches or gets louder, get out of the water.
- Don’t jump from rocks without knowing how deep the water is.
- Sturdy shoes prevent sprains on wet rocks.
- Hydration and sun: the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) is hot and, in the dry season (May to September), air humidity drops. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen.
- Insects: repellent helps, especially in the rainy season.
Travel first-aid kit
Bring any regular medication, blister plasters, sunscreen, insect repellent and a painkiller you normally use. If you have any doubts about your health, see your doctor before travelling.
