Churches, museums, food and shopping — and why rain changes the rules at the waterfalls.

The rainy season turns the Cerrado (central Brazil’s savanna) green and fills the waterfalls, but it also brings heavy downpours, concentrated from October to March according to Climatempo’s averages. A rainy day will not ruin your trip: Pirenópolis has good indoor options — and a few safety rules that must not be ignored.
Safety first
- Dirt roads to some attractions get slippery; ask about conditions before setting off.
- Trails with wet rocks call for shoes with good grip.
- Lightning: in a storm, leave open areas and get out of the water.
Indoor options
Historic churches
The churches in the centre are among the best options for an overcast day. According to the City Hall’s listings, they open on limited days and hours and charge a token entrance fee — confirm beforehand.
- Mother Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, restored after the 2002 fire.
- Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, home to the Museum of Sacred Art.
- Bonfim Church — check whether it is open to visitors before you go.
Museums
- Museu do Divino, in the old town council and jail building, next to the Rio das Almas bridge.
- Museu Rodas do Tempo, with vintage two-wheeled vehicles and toys, on Alto do Bonfim; according to the City Hall, it opens Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays.
Unhurried meals
A long lunch is a great rainy-day plan. Rua do Rosário and Rua Aurora are lined with restaurants, bars and cafés. See where to eat.
Shopping and crafts
Craft shops, silver jewellers and delicatessens in the historic centre are good on a grey day. The Feira das Artes (Arts Fair), on Praça do Coreto, is outdoors — check whether it is set up. See shops and crafts.
When the rain stops
Summer downpours are usually short-lived. As soon as the weather clears:
- Walk around the historic centre — the stone streets look lovely after rain, but they are slippery.
- Visit Fazenda Babilônia, a former colonial sugar mill with guided tours (Friday to Sunday, according to the City Hall).
- Go back to the waterfalls only when the site confirms the river is safe.

Can I go to a waterfall if it is raining?
Only if the site is open and allows access to the water. Rain upstream can cause a flash flood (cabeça d'água) even where it is not raining. Follow the staff's instructions and do not enter the river if there are signs of rising water.
