If there is one place in central Pirenópolis that explains the town in just a few rooms, it is the Museu do Divino. It occupies the old Casa de Câmara e Cadeia (town council and jail), on Avenida Beira Rio, next to the bridge over the Rio das Almas. According to the City Hall, the current building is a 1919 replica restored by Iphan, Brazil’s national heritage institute, and it is now devoted to the Festa do Divino Espírito Santo (Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit).
Why the Divino has its own museum
The Festa do Divino Espírito Santo de Pirenópolis was registered by Iphan as Cultural Heritage of Brazil in 2010, in the Book of Celebrations, and the registration was renewed in 2025. It is the celebration that shapes much of the town’s calendar and memory: folias (musical processions), novenas, the Emperor of the Divino, the masked riders and the Cavalhadas.
The museum is the most practical way to get to know this tradition outside festival season, which takes place around Pentecost, usually in May or June.
What to expect
- The building: a Casa de Câmara e Cadeia was a common type of building in Brazilian colonial towns, combining municipal government and the prison.
- The theme: the exhibition focuses on the Festa do Divino and the traditions connected to it.
- The surroundings: the bridge, the public river beach on the Rio das Almas and the start of Rua Direita are just steps away.
Allow 30 to 45 minutes.
How to fit it into your itinerary
The museum is a natural stop on a walk through the historic centre:
- Start at the Mother Church;
- walk down Rua Direita to the bridge;
- visit the Museu do Divino;
- continue to the Carmo Church and Museum of Sacred Art.
It is also a good indoor option for rainy days and for families travelling with kids curious about the festival’s masks and costumes.
Entrance fee
The City Hall reports a token entrance fee. Price checked on the official listing:
Other museums in town
