Best time to visit Pirenópolis: weather, waterfalls and festivals
Dry or wet, festival or peace and quiet: how to choose the right time for your trip.

Pirenópolis can be visited all year round, but the experience changes a lot with the calendar. The climate of the Cerrado — the tropical savanna of central Brazil — has two well-defined seasons, and traditional festivals transform the town on specific dates. Remember that this is the Southern Hemisphere: June to August is winter here. Choose based on what you want from your trip.
The two seasons of the Cerrado
The averages below come from Climatempo’s climate data for Pirenópolis (reference data, not a forecast):
| Period | Average rainfall | Temperatures | What it is usually like |
|---|---|---|---|
| June to August | practically none (1 to 5 mm/month) | lows around 16 °C in July | Very dry, clear skies, cool nights, very dry air |
| September | low (about 29 mm) | highs among the hottest of the year | End of the dry season, hot |
| October to March | high (December reaches about 290 mm) | highs of 27 to 31 °C | Hot, downpours, green Cerrado |
| April and May | decreasing (92 mm and 17 mm) | pleasant | Transition, waterfalls still with good flow |
What each season is best for
- Trails, mountains and dirt roads: the dry season. Pireneus State Park and the more distant waterfalls are easier to reach.
- Full waterfalls and green landscapes: the rainy season, keeping an eye on the weather.
- Peace and fewer people: weekdays outside public holidays and festivals.
The festival calendar
The City Hall’s 2026 Cultural Calendar shows how much the town loves a celebration. Some highlights:
- Festa do Divino Espírito Santo (Festival of the Divine Holy Spirit) and Cavalhadas — around Pentecost. In 2026, Pentecost Sunday fell on 24 May, with the Cavalhadas from 24 to 26 May. See Festa do Divino and Cavalhadas.
- Festa do Morro — a pilgrimage in honour of the Holy Trinity on the Pico dos Pireneus, on the full moon of July; in 2026, from 30 July to 2 August. See Festa do Morro.
- Canto da Primavera — a music festival; the 2026 edition took place from 8 to 13 September, according to the official website.
- Town anniversary — 7 October. In 2027, Pirenópolis turns 300.
- FLIPIRI — a literary festival; for 2026 the press announced a programme in the historic centre in November. See Flipiri.
The full calendar, with the status of each date, is in Pirenópolis events.
Crowds and bookings
- Festa do Divino, long holiday weekends and Carnival: the town is packed, accommodation is pricier and in high demand, and there are queues at sites with daily limits.
- Ordinary weekends: pleasantly busy, more so on Saturdays.
- Weekdays: a quiet town; some restaurants and attractions open on fewer days of the week. The City Hall, for example, says the historic churches open for visits Wednesday to Sunday — confirm beforehand.
In short
- For festivals and culture: the Divino season, booking well ahead.
- For trails and mountains: May to September.
- For full waterfalls: the middle of the rainy season, with caution.
- For peace and quiet: weekdays outside public holidays.
Once you have chosen your dates, decide how long to stay in Pirenópolis itineraries.
