Pirenópolis in 2 days: historic centre and waterfalls
The classic weekend: one day in the historic centre and one day at a waterfall.

Two days is the most common format for people coming from Brasília (Brazil’s capital) or Goiânia (capital of Goiás state). The secret is not trying to see everything: one day for the town, another for nature. If you arrive on Friday night, swap the order depending on the weather forecast.
Day 1 — Historic centre
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Walk around the historic centre: Rua Direita, the bridge over the Rio das Almas and the Museu do Divino |
| Lunch | Traditional Goiás cooking in the centre — see where to eat |
| Afternoon | The Igreja Matriz do Rosário and the Igreja do Carmo, with the Museum of Sacred Art |
| Evening | Rua do Rosário (the Rua do Lazer) and, on weekends, the Feira das Artes craft fair in Praça do Coreto |
Churches and museums open at limited times, according to the City Hall fact sheets. That is why these visits are in the afternoon; check before you go.
Day 2 — Waterfall
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morning | Early start for a waterfall: Bonsucesso (closer) or Abade |
| Lunch | At the attraction itself, if it has facilities, or back in town |
| Afternoon | River swim, rest and return |
| End of the day | Drive home, ideally while it is still light |
Alternatives
- Prefer forest and a short trail? Swap the waterfall for the Vagafogo Sanctuary, in Alto do Carmo, with a riverside trail and brunch (book on its website).
- Rained out? Focus on the churches, museums and food — see Pirenópolis on rainy days.
- Travelling with children? Pick short trails and shallow pools; see Pirenópolis with kids.
Where to sleep
For a weekend, staying in or near the historic centre saves time: you can do all of day 1 on foot. Compare the areas in where to stay in Pirenópolis.
Want one more day?
With three days you can head up into the Serra dos Pireneus. See the 3-day itinerary.
Frequently asked questions
Arriving on Friday night, how do I make the most of it?
Keep Friday for dinner in the historic centre and use Saturday for the waterfall, leaving early. That leaves Sunday for the churches, the museums and an unhurried trip home.
Which waterfall should I pick for a weekend?
Choose one close to town, such as Cachoeiras Bonsucesso (about 5 km, according to its official website), or Cachoeira do Abade (about 17 km), bearing in mind that Abade requires buying tickets in advance.
