For people living in Goiânia, the capital of Goiás state, Pirenópolis is a short trip: according to the City Hall’s Tourism Portal, it is about 120 km away. The route passes through Anápolis, where the state highways leading to the town begin.
The driving route
- Leave Goiânia on the BR-060/BR-153 towards Anápolis.
- In Anápolis, take the GO-431 (Rodovia Jarbas Jayme), which leads to Pirenópolis — the same highway where Fazenda Babilônia stands, at km 3.
- Alternatively, you can take the GO-338, which also links the Anápolis area to Pirenópolis and continues on to Goianésia.
Between Anápolis and Pirenópolis, local websites estimate about an hour’s drive. Total time depends on traffic leaving Goiânia and crossing Anápolis.
By bus
Local websites mention Viação Goianésia routes from Goiânia and Anápolis to Pirenópolis, and Viação Ouro Preto from Anápolis. As timetables change, check with the companies or the bus station before travelling. Without a car, see how to get organised in Pirenópolis without a car.
Flying into Goiânia
Goiânia Airport (Santa Genoveva, GYN) receives flights from several Brazilian state capitals. From there, continue by rental car or transfer along the route above, or head to the Goiânia bus station to catch a bus.
Road tips
- Check the route on the day: roadworks and detours in Anápolis are frequent.
- Fuel: fill up before taking dirt roads to the waterfalls.
- Public holidays: the return on the last day usually brings heavy traffic approaching Goiânia.
- Rain: in the rainy season (October to April), the dirt roads to some attractions get slippery.
Day trip or weekend?
The distance allows a day trip, but ideally stay at least one night: the historic centre lit up at night and the buzz of Rua do Rosário after dark are part of the experience. See the 2-day itinerary and the options for where to stay.
